Richard O'Dwyer and his mother Julia arrive at Westminster Magistrates Court
A SHEFFIELD student who created a website which helped people watch films and TV shows for free can be extradited to the US to face copyright infringement allegations, a court ruled today.

Sheffield Hallam University undergraduate Richard O’Dwyer, 23, allegedly earned thousands of pounds through advertising on the TVShack website before it was closed down by the US authorities.
He faces jail if convicted of the allegations, which were brought following a crackdown by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
His lawyer Ben Cooper has argued that the site did not store copyright material itself and merely pointed users to other sites, in the same way that Google and Yahoo operate.
Mr Cooper also claimed his client would be the first British citizen to be extradited for such an offence and would effectively become a “guinea pig” for copyright law in the US.
His mother Julia O’Dwyer, from Chesterfield, has described the action as “beyond belief” and the UK’s extradition treaty with the US as “rotten”.
But District Judge Quentin Purdy ruled today at Westminster Magistrates’ Court that the extradition could go ahead.
Mr Cooper indicated he would appeal against the ruling.
O’Dwyer, who wore a grey shirt and blue jeans, showed no emotion as the ruling was made.
His mother Julia criticised Britain’s extradition treaty with the US.
She said after the hearing: “If they want to prosecute something they will.
“There’s no safeguards here for British citizens.”
She also claimed the District Judge did not have the “technical brains to know about the whole thing”.
She added: “That guy just lives and breathes extradition.”
In short, utter utter madness.... I just overheard this on BBC Radio News.
So, the British Government will now extradite people to the US for trial under copyright law?
Yes you read that right; it's John Carpenter's "The Thing" meets Pingu.
So wrong it's very very right...
Just in case the embedding has failed (whats going on with Posterous and YouTube these days?) you can watch it here:
As described by the wonderful folk at MIT:
"A Rubens Tube is a classic physics demonstration. The device is simply a tube with a source of propane on one side, a speaker on the other, and a bunch of holes along the length. When the speaker outputs certain tones, the sound waves bouncing around the inside of the tube set up standing waves with areas of high and low pressure. The higher pressure areas force propane out faster and makes a larger flame.
"Still Alive" is a song with lots of sustained, computer generated tones that happen to be of the right frequency to react with our tube."
Love the track, and the video had me laughing for quite a while.... but then i felt awful for finding it funny... then kept laughing anyway.
Great stuff :)
Simple and effective, this rather made my afternoon :)

This puppetry based film looks utterly fantastic, and some great moments of horror as witnessed (if you're of a jumpy disposition, heads up for the end of the trailer!).
This is both a stage performance, as well as a live action film supported by the Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams Films and the Jim Henson Foundation, and starts Christopher Lloyd and Elijah Wood.
I really hope we get to see this in the UK, both the film and the stage performance! It looks like the perfect winter horror tale :)
There's more behind the scenes footage here, with some utterly beautiful shadow puppetry to boot: http://vimeo.com/16990630
